Today we, the people of Super Punk, have declared our independence. The new state, known henceforth as Super Punk Games, has removed its shackles, left behind its millstones and become a Free Developer in Nottingham city centre.
We weren’t entirely sure how to go about actually declaring our independence, so we googled it, as you do.
It turns out the American Declaration of Independence of July 4th, 1776 is a fine document (actually signed 2nd Aug!), so using the practise of blatant plagiarism, behold the butchery of a fine document in the name of Indie Game Developers everywhere!
From this day forward, 20th May shall hereby be known as Super Punk Independence Day.

When in the Course of Game Development, it becomes necessary for one games company to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with a publisher, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Commerce and Opportunity entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all developers are created equal, that they are endowed by all Game Creators with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are I.P. ownership, originality, risk and the pursuit of Crunch-Free Projects.–That whenever any Publishing agreement becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the Developers to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new publishing relationships, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Financial Freedom and Stability. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that publishing relationships long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; but when a long train of abuses and usurpations reveals a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Publishing relationships, and to provide new Tower Defences for their future security.–The history of certain Publishing Establishments is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, and the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over Game Developers. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
- For continuing to polish turds.
- For pretending that Double Triple A (AAA*2) is a thing. Its not. Its silly. Stop it.
- For imposing the free-to-play paradigm and for ensuring that players hit a pay-wall within 5 minutes of playing.
- For allowing marketing people who don’t play games to affect game design decisions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated Milestone Delays. A Publisher whose character is thus marked by every act which may define an Epic Boss Battle, is unfit to be the ruler of free developers.
We, therefore, the Representatives of Super Punk Games, in General Congress, Creatively Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World (Sid Meier) for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good developers of the world, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Coders, Artists and Designers are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent Developers; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the Publishers; and that as Free and Independent Developers, they have full Power to develop games, conclude their own Insane PR & Marketing campaigns, contract Alliances and Illnesses, establish a Twitter profile, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent Developers may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, we mutually pledge to each other our Dedication, our Skills and our sacred Ideas.
